The Abtshagen nature reserve is a 247  hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , ten kilometers south of Stralsund .

The eponymous place Abtshagen is one kilometer southeast. It was placed under protection on December 12, 1971 with an extension in 1972. The protected area includes a forest area with old trees, which is divided by federal highway 194 .

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory. A network of ditches drains the land in the direction of Barthe and planted conifers inhibit natural development. The area can be entered on public roads.

history

The protected area is embedded in a flat ground moraine landscape. The Barthegraben forms the southern border. It was created to drain the land in the 19th century. The forest area was used as a middle and coppice forest. Alien conifers were planted in the 20th century.

Flora and fauna

The area is characterized by different humid locations. At higher altitudes there is beech forest with pearl grass , golden nettle , cowslip , sanicle and celandine . Alder , ash and hornbeam grow in more humid locations . Handsome orchid and great two-leaf orchids were found in the area. The nature reserve is home to rare species of birds such as wood sandpiper , stock dove , crane , woodcock and middle woodpecker .
