The nature reserve Nordwestufer Wittow and Kreptitzer Heide is a 100 hectare nature reserve on the peninsula Wittow (Rügen) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . An extensive section of the steep coast is protected with upstream block and stone grounds as well as one of the longest active marl cliffs in Germany with dunes and sandy grasslands . Furthermore, the heath area of Krepitzer Heide to the northeast is to be preserved. The designation took place on October 13, 1994 with an extension in 2006.

Surrounding places are Dranske in the south and Kreptitz in the east.

Flora and fauna

The cliff is made up of sloping mixed forests, bushes and dry grass. Gray dune lawn dominates in Kreptitzer Heide.

Different types of seaweed , such as bladder and sugar seaweed , grow on the block and stone grounds, which at the same time accommodate a diverse fauna with blue mussels , watt snails , multi- bristled annelid worms and tube bristle worms . Both serve ducks all year round as a food source. Breeding birds in the area are sand martins in the cliff coast (up to 2,000 pairs), as well as carmine pimples , gray bunting , barnacles and red- backed kitties .

The Wittow outer coast is a guideline for bird migration . In spring and autumn, large numbers of cranes , geese , swans and birds of prey can be observed. 12 different species of bumblebee were detected in the area. The nature reserve is still the habitat of 13 butterfly species , such as the migratory butterfly , admiral , painted lady , gamma owl , rust bandage , small mother-of-pearl and small fire butterfly . Species of grasshopper in the area are the short-winged bite insect , the common shrub hedge and grasshopper .
