Nature reserve Kniepower See and Katharinensee
Location of the NSG in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania |
The Kniepower See and Katharinensee nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It covers an area of 30 hectares and is located between the towns of Karnitz and Kniepow.
The condition of the Katharinensee is regarded as very good, that of the Kniepower See as good. The nutrient inputs of the past decades have impaired the water quality.
A hiking trail to Kniepow leads through the area.
history
The two lakes are embedded in the ground moraine of Muttlandes of Ruegen. The landscape was decisively shaped by the defrosting phases of the last ice age . The ice masses and meltwater created a strong relief, with sand deposits and dead ice forms . The almost right-angled Kniepower See goes back to a crossing of the meltwater courses. The Katharinensee emerged as a dead ice shape and formed into the Kesselsee without any drainage.
The first evidence of human settlement in the area can be seen in the Slavic ramparts from the 10th century east of Kniepow. The original measuring table from 1836 shows the lakes surrounded by forest and scrub forest. The areas on the west bank were used as fields, later these were reforested with larches and spruces. During the GDR era, wastewater from agriculture and households was increasingly directed into the Kniepower See. There was a silage rental on the east bank of the lake and seepage water affected the water quality.
Flora and fauna
The currently eutrophic Kniepower See is populated with dense stocks of waterweed . The white water lily and the great pond rose can be found on the surface of the water. A reed zone with reeds surrounds the lake, which in places changes into alder forest with bitter cattail , cattail and sedges .
The mesotrophic St. Catherine's Lake is lined with a rocking blanket made of reeds, stiff sedge , swamp sedge and knotty hedgehog . Noteworthy are the occurrences of the common water hose and simple hedgehog cob . Partial areas between the lakes are occupied by spruce and larch forests. It is surrounded by a forest with birches , oaks and beeches .
So far, 59 mollusc species have been identified in both lakes . Swimming beetles such as the large piston water beetle and the juggler also live in the lake. Pike , eel , tench and perch have been observed in fish species . Breeding birds in the area are oriole , kingfisher , little grebe and greylag goose .
