The nature reserve Nordufer Wittow with Hohen Dielen is a 144 hectare nature reserve on the Wittow peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It consists of two sub-areas north of Putgarten : the section of Wittow's cliff coast and a small area south of the Hohe Diele hill near Arkona . The expulsion took place on November 5, 1990 with an extension in 1994.

The purpose of protection consists in the preservation, development and maintenance of a mosaic of semi - arid grassland , seepage floors , bush-beech forest on the calm cliff , flushing fringe , primary dune and natural salt- grass vegetation , which is unique in northern Germany . The north bank of Wittow has the largest and most scenic block beach in Germany.

The cliff and beach areas are in very good condition. The intensive tourist use leads to impairments.

The nature reserve is part of the FFH area steep coast and block grounds Wittow .

A hiking trail on the edge of the cliff allows you to walk through the area.

Flora and fauna

Species-rich semi-arid grassland can be found in the Hohen Dielen part of the area. The main part of the nature reserve, on the other hand, consists of beech forest, interspersed with ash , pine , sycamore maple , sea buckthorn and elderberry . The area contains (in addition to the north and east coast of Jasmund) the only natural salt lawns in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Baltic Sea area, the richest occurrence of real sea kale in this area and the only occurrence of common sea lavender on Rügen. Other representatives of the salt marsh vegetation are beach trident and goose cinquefoil .

The block beach and the offshore shallow water areas are an important wintering area for water birds, especially diving ducks and sawsaws. The shallow water areas cover seaweed and mussels .
