The Zehlendorfer Moor nature reserve is an approximately 90 hectare nature reserve in the Recknitz Valley between the towns of Zehlendorf (part of the municipality of Kuhs ) and Recknitz (part of the municipality of Plaaz ). It is divided into two areas, which are separated by the Zehlendorfer Damm. It was placed under protection in 1972. The condition of the area is unsatisfactory, as the effects of drainage interventions in previous decades have not yet been reversed.

history

The Wiebekingsche map from 1786 shows open lake areas, surrounded by meadows. For a long time, the Recknitztal formed an impassable area in the area of the Zehlendorfer Moor and thus a natural border between the places Zehlendorf and Recknitz, which are now connected by a flagstone path. The drainage of the areas as part of the complex improvement from the 1960s and the agricultural use led to the decline of numerous plant species. Since 2005, extensive rewetting measures (renaturation) have been used to promote natural development. Currently the area is left open as wasteland. However, adjacent areas are still used intensively for agriculture as meadows and, together with ongoing drainage, lead to nutrient inputs.

Flora and fauna

Until the 1960s, forms of vegetation in the limestone and basement bogs as well as whistle grass meadows were detected in the area. Characteristic species were wire sedge, splendid carnation , great hendelwort , stiff-leaved orchid , swamp sitter , blue tarant and globe flower .

The drainage changed the plant regime towards nitrogen-loving species such as burdock bedstraw , greater nettle , field thistle , hollow tooth and wire- haired willowherb . Mass stands of land riding grass and swamp riding grass formed on unused areas .

It can Sumpfrohrsänger , Whinchat and occasionally the corncrake be observed. The curlew is a former breeding bird . For many birds, such as the lapwing , golden plover and white stork , the Recknitz valley represents a migration corridor.

Ownership

A large part of the area was transferred to the Foundation for Environmental and Nature Conservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as part of the renaturation (moor conservation program MV) in recent years.
