Coordinates: 53 ° 42 ′ 57.2 " N , 12 ° 2 ′ 10.4" E
The Upahler and Lenzener See nature reserve is a 520 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania about twelve kilometers southwest of the city of Güstrow . Surrounding villages are Tieplitz , Groß Upahl, Hägerfelde, Klein Upahl , Lenzen and Ruchow. The designation took place on July 5, 1978 with an extension in 1999 and is intended to protect and preserve the lake areas of the Groß Upahler and Lenzener lakes as well as adjacent forests. The state of the area is satisfactory due to extensive nutrient inputs from neighboring agricultural areas and settlements. The forest areas are only used extensively. The area can be entered on designated paths. The southern Jasenberg offers good visibility over the areas. The nature reserve is part of the FFH area forest and water landscape around Groß Upahl and Boitin .
history
The area was created by the shaping forces of the last ice age over 10,000 years ago. A raised terminal moraine extends over the present-day villages of Klein-Upahl, Lenzen and Ruchow. The defrost ice scraped from the Lakes Basin and formed by the entrained sediment material south to Sander . Settlement in the area has been documented since the Bronze Age . The heavily reliefed terrain was difficult to use, so the Strietholz and Bonrath forest areas in the protected area remained unused. The lakes were lowered by drainage in the direction of fog from the 13th century . The areas were used as a meadow . Up until 1840, several water mills were in operation north of today's protected area . Competing ideas between farmers and millers about the height of the lake water level led to centuries of disputes. Even today, the lake areas are drained to the north via the former mill streams.
Flora and fauna
Both lakes are of course eutrophic and have chandelier algae and spawning herbs as typical plants . The banks of the river are lined with quarries and reeds . The Lenzener meadows are mowed once a year. Notable meadow plants are broad-leaved orchid , swamp trident , fluffy meadow oats , brook avens , meadow primrose and cabbage thistle . The forest areas are planted with beech forest . Since there was little use, individual trees were 180 years old. Breeding birds in the area are crane , sea eagle , marsh harrier , stock dove , jackdaw , black woodpecker , green woodpecker and gray goose . In spring and autumn, the areas serve as a resting place for numerous migratory bird species. Important amphibians are the red-bellied toad and crested newt . Otters and dormice live in the area.
