The nature reserve Strangen is an 80 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania north of Zarrentin in the Schaalsee biosphere reserve . It was placed under protection on May 15, 1990 with the aim of protecting a Seerandmoor and a bay-rich still water - the Kirchensee - with its siltation zones. It encompasses the northern part of the Kirchensee, the Strangen peninsula and the adjacent lowland areas to the north.

The current state of the area is assessed as good. Due to the remote location on the inner-German border, the areas could develop free of use over decades . A circular hiking trail around the Kirchensee and the Strangen peninsula allow you to enter the areas.

The nature reserve, together with the nature reserves Niendorfer-Bernstorfer Binnensee and Techin , with the area where the Schaale flows into the Schaalsee and the areas of the Schaalsee in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania area, forms the FFH area Schaalsee (MV) .

history

The areas of today's protected area were created in the last Ice Age . They are located in the Schaalsee basin, which was excavated during the Frankfurt ice advance. The nine-meter Kirchensee is a former bay of the Schaalsee, today separated by the Strangen peninsula and the dam that was built in 1911 at the instigation of a pharmacist from Zarrentin. Remains of pile dwellings were found in the Kirchensee, which indicate early settlement. In more recent times the strand was used as a guard and peat was extracted. Furthermore, lime was used to produce quicklime removed. Goats grazed open areas until 1896. In the 20th century, the areas were initially a popular destination with a restaurant and landing stage for passenger ships. From 1961 the areas were in the restricted area of the inner-German border. The last mines were not cleared until 1994.

Flora and fauna

Today you can find swamp forests with alder , ash and birch on the peated fen areas . These are underlaid with pipe grass , sedges , reeds , rush edge , bell heather , dark berries and occasional peat moss . The areas are a valuable breeding area for many bird species, including minke , Rothals- and grebes , mergansers , bitterns , cranes , Water Rail , Kingfisher , Reed Warbler , Golden Oriole , Red-backed Shrike and numerous ducks. The area is home to otters, as well as numerous reptiles and amphibians such as adder , grass snake and tree frog . A total of 41 species of beetles were detected, as well as numerous species of dragonflies .
