The areas were decisively shaped by the last ice age . A large dune area was created along the Elbe glacial valley , stretching from Wittenberge in the south to Boizenburg in the north over a length of about 100 km. The Schmölener dune is the largest inland sand dune in Europe. 100 years ago attempts were made to reforest the dune to protect adjacent fields from silting up. Until the construction of the Löcknitz polder in the 1970s, the flooding of the Elbe reached the foot of the dune.
