The Quaßliner Moor nature reserve is a 61 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg . It is located south of Lübz between the villages of Klein Damerow, part of the municipality of Ganzlin, and Quaßliner Mühle, a part of Gehlsbach . The protection of the Mecklenburg part already took place on August 15, 1959 with the aim of protecting and developing a springy moor complex with a rich mussel and snail fauna. The Quaßliner Moor is integrated into the Natura2000 network via the Gehlsbachtal nature reserve in the north-west and the Marienfließ nature reserve to the east .

The current state of the area is only assessed as satisfactory, as the water balance of the areas is disturbed by surrounding drainage.

There are no public roads in the area.

History of the protection

The relatively early protection is due to the first nature conservation officer of the Parchim district, Walter Dahnke (1890–1972). Even then, he recognized the great variety of species and habitats and ensured that the area was designated as a nature reserve.

Voluntary protected area supervisors:

  • 1959–2006 → Walter Kintzel
  • 2006 until today → André Steinhäuser

Geology and history

The Quaßliner Moor is embedded in a meltwater channel that stretches from north to south and runs through a sand landscape created during the Ice Age. Two spring brooks supply groundwater and feed the flowing water, known today as the Quaßliner Mühlbach or Seegraben, which crosses the protected area and was dammed for the operation of the Quaßliner Mühle from the 14th century. A spring moor with layers of peat up to two meters thick developed in the northern part of the reserve. It was not affected by the damming measures. The Wiebekingsche map shows the areas free of forest and managed as grassland. Higher lying mineral soils were subject to arable use. In the 19th century, the wet meadows were mowed to produce litter . Small hand peat cuttings were made in the bog.

Flora

Above all, the small-scale peat cuttings and bog meadows show numerous plant species. Blue tarant , spotted and broad-leaved orchid (ssp. Brevifolia) , fox's orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii), dull-flowered bulrush , swamp-rose herb , swamp-heart leaf , swamp-sitter and numerous types of sedges occur. In the area of the flow-through bog, with increasing distance from the source location, species that are adapted to nutrient depletion are found, including round-leaved sundew and peat moss . At the edge of the moor meadows, there are meadows of pipe grass with arnica , Nordic bedstraw , bell heather , caraway silge , lung gentian and Silau . Scattered on higher elevations of the mineral soil islands, the soil is covered with fescue sheep and woody trees.

In addition, there is a field wild herb reserve (cf. field edge strip ) with u. a. Corn wheel and common pasque flower . There are plans to include the reserve in the "100 Acres for Diversity" project.

Wildlife

48 species of mussels and snails as well as 184 species of beetles have been identified in the area. In addition, 110 species of hoverflies were found, including the first record of the hoverfly Callicera fagesii . Breeding birds in the area include snipe , Whinchat , kingfisher , gray wagtail , green woodpecker , hawk , crane , red-backed shrike , red kite , turtledove and turncoat .
