The Bretziner Heide nature reserve is a 31-hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania eight kilometers northeast of Boizenburg . It is one of the last dry dwarf shrub heaths in West Mecklenburg. It was placed under protection on April 16, 1974. The state of the area is good, as the immigration of woody plants has been slowed down by plagging and grazing with sheep. Surrounding places are the eponymous Bretzin not far south and Wiebendorf. The nature reserve was in the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park . The areas can be accessed on existing paths. There is a visitor parking lot in the southern area.
history
The area arose on a moraine plateau from the Saale Ice Age , which was bordered by two glacial valleys , today's rivers Boize in the west and Schaale in the east.
Human use of the areas has been documented by barrows since the Bronze Age . For centuries pasture was used and raw humus was extracted, so that the areas became extremely poor in nutrients. The heather with an area of 35 hectares is also shown on the Schmettauschen map from 1788. From the 1970s, the original land use was discontinued and the areas were bushed. The first maintenance measures began at the end of the 1970s. The areas were mowed, trees and shrubs removed and Gotland sheep grazed from 1985 to 1992 . In 1993 and 1994 mechanical pest was carried out and then grazing with sheep of the Scottish blackface breed .
Flora
The defining plants are wiryweed and heather . A forest of birch and oak surrounds the area. Notable breeding birds are the green woodpecker and wryneck in the area.
Barrows
The barrows of the Bretziner Heide date from the Bronze Age approx. 3000 to 3500 years ago. In the mounds of earth there are tree coffins that are embedded in a layer of stones the size of a fist. In the course of the Bronze Age, the existing barrows were also used to bury urns. In addition to privileged people, people from all walks of life found their final resting place in these graves.
