The Elbhang "Vierwald" nature reserve was a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania two kilometers west of the Boizenburg district of Vier. It was located in the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park . The protection purpose of the 185 hectare area consisted in the preservation of an undiked section of the Elbe with owl meadows and a mixed forest.

Today the area is located in the UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve Riverine Landscape Elbe-Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . With the passing of the "Law on the Biosphere Reserve River Landscape of the Elbe Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania" on January 15, 2015, the large protected area was divided into core, maintenance and development zones in order to implement the national criteria for the recognition and review of UNESCO biosphere reserves in Germany (Section 6 BRElbeG MV). At the same time, Article 7 of the law "Repeal of Legal Provisions" repealed the national protected area ordinances and resolutions, among other things, on landscape and nature reserves and on the "Mecklenburg Elbe Valley" nature park, so that these protected area categories no longer exist within the biosphere reserve. The areas of the nature reserve have been given the status of care zone in the UNESCO Elbe-Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania River Landscape Biosphere Reserve. According to EU law, the area is also part of an FFH and bird protection area .

The state of the area is classified as very good, as the floodplain areas are subject to natural flood dynamics and the forests develop largely undisturbed.

history

The areas were decisively shaped by the last ice age . Part of the area lies in the glacial valley of the Elbe . The current proportion of forest and open land can already be seen on Wiebeking's map from 1786. The inner-German border ran directly south of today's protected area. The Boizenburg district of Vier was given up during GDR times due to its proximity to the border.

Flora and fauna

The sub-areas take up the majority of the protected area. Typical plant species are cane grass , reed , gundermann and burnt umbel . Further to the west there is a riparian forest with water intestines as well as white willows and osier . The higher elevations are covered by a deciduous forest made up of English oak , field and sycamore maple , bird cherry as well as field and white elm .

Breeding birds are black kite , kestrel , stock dove , kingfisher , common raven , partridge , red- backed red-backed chick and titmouse . The otter lives in the area.
