history

The Togerwiesen are located in the original glacial valley of the Elbe . The near-surface groundwater led to the formation of bogs and lawn iron ores . The latter have been dismantled in the past. Longer use of the area was probably not possible in the past due to the high water levels. In 1989 there were major interventions when an attempt was made to dry the areas by building inland drainage ditches and leveling. The construction work was stopped when the protected area was designated. In the following years, attempts were made to reduce the consequences of these interventions. Higher-lying areas are promoted as extensive grassland within the framework of the state funding program for nature conservation-friendly grassland use.

Flora and fauna

Wet meadows with sedges and rushes are plentiful. Notable breeding birds in the area are the crane , marsh harrier , lapwing , common snipe , whinchat and whinchat . The food guests are white and black storks .
