Brantensee nature reserve

The Brantensee nature reserve is a 89 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one kilometer south of Karow . The federal highways 192 and 103 and the former Krakow-Plau railway line form the northern and western borders. The expulsion took place on September 24, 1960 with a reduction in size in 1997.

The purpose of the protection is to preserve a richly structured forest, lake and moor area.

The nature reserve is located in the Nossentiner / Schwinzer Heide nature park and is classified as a bird sanctuary and FFH area under EU law .

The current state of the area is only considered to be good, with the northern part of the protected area still being connected to drainage ditches, which has a negative effect on the protection purpose.

The protected area is only accessible in the northern part in the area of the mausoleum of the Schlutius family .

History and water balance

The areas of today's protected area go back to a form of dead ice from the last ice age . The eponymous Brantensee no longer exists since the lake was drained in 1880. It can still be seen on Wiebeking's map in the 18th century as a 50 hectare lake with surrounding moors. The Brantensee was connected to the Plauer See lake to the east by two gullies , which even today represent the drainage in the southeast as ditches. A dam regulates the water level in the area. After the drainage, the areas were primarily used for forestry purposes and reforested with English oak, Sitka spruce and spruce. In the 1980s there was a peat fire on the very dry moorland that lasted for several months. Since the designation as a protected area in 1990, attempts have been made to raise the water level.

Flora and fauna

On the remaining water areas of the former lake, water feathers , frog bites and common water hose still grow . Swinging lawns made of peat moss and sedge beds are surrounded by reed beds . In places there are pioneer trees with willow , black alder and downy birch.

Breeding birds in the area are crane , greylag goose , marsh harrier and white rail .
