The Friedrichsmoor nature reserve is a 155 hectare nature reserve in the Lewitz landscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The eponymous town of Friedrichsmoor is located one kilometer south. The Breite Graben runs through the area from the direction of the Stör Canal to the north . The nature reserve Fischteiche in the Lewitz connects directly to the northeast of the Stör Canal . The designation took place on July 22, 1938 with a reduction in size in 1961. A wooded section of the Lewitz is to be preserved and developed, which is characterized by changing water and soil conditions.

The state of the area is rated as satisfactory. Lower groundwater levels led to nutrient enrichment in the soil and increased woody growth. The nature reserve is being examined as a natural forest reserve as part of basic forest research.

The areas are part of the EU bird sanctuary Lewitz.

There are public paths through the area that allow entry.

history

The areas were decisively shaped by the thawing glacier water during the last ice age . Extensive sand areas were washed up, which became swampy and wooded due to the proximity of the groundwater. However, the areas were already free of forests in the Middle Ages and were only afforested with red beech and black alder from the 19th century . The digging of trenches to lower the groundwater even made it possible to plant common oaks on the formerly damp areas.

Flora and fauna

The interventions in the groundwater regime changed the flora and fauna. There are currently swamp forests with alder and birch trees. The marsh marigold grows in the forest meadows . All woodpecker species in the state breed in the area , as well as stock doves and white-tailed eagles , robins , fitis , chiffchaff and tree pipit . Occasionally black stork and wryneck have been observed.
