The Töpferberg nature reserve is a 13 hectare nature reserve in the Lewitz landscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The areas are not far northwest of Neustadt-Glewe , near the district of Hohewisch , on the north bank of the Elde .

The expulsion took place on August 17, 1959 with the aim of protecting a sandy heather on a dune belt with endangered plant species.

The state of the area is classified as unsatisfactory. Due to the abandonment of use, woody plants immigrate as part of the area succession . Forest the areas so that the original heather disappears.

The areas are part of the EU bird sanctuary Lewitz.

There are no paths in the area. A path leads along the eastern edge of the dune.

history

The areas were decisively shaped during the last ice age . Sander was piled up from the meltwater . Wind shifting led to the layering of what is now known as the Töpferberg dune . Human settlement is documented by the finds of potsherds since the Middle and Early Stone Age . The originally wooded ridge was used as pasture and arable fields from 1800 together with the adjacent areas. This form of use was discontinued after the end of the Second World War. The dune served as a mining site for sand and gravel up until the date it was placed under protection, which led to the extensive loss of the dune. Parts of the nature reserve served as cattle and horse pastures.

Flora and fauna

The plant and animal world has changed due to the abandonment of use in the majority of the nature reserve since the 1970s. Trees such as birch and English oak are migrating in and displacing the previous rough lawns with bristle grass , bell heather , lung gentian , dyer's notch , pasque flower and spotted orchid . Notable breeding birds are the red kite and red-backed shrimp . The forest lizard lives in the area. Furthermore, grasshopper species such as the blue-winged wasteland insect and the heather grasshopper were found.
