The Sonnenberg nature reserve is a 116 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania three kilometers southwest of Parchim, immediately north of the town of Kiekindemark . The eponymous Sonnenberg is 500 meters to the east. It was placed under protection on May 1, 1957 with the purpose of protecting and developing a forest complex on an old moraine site.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory, as extensive forest management is currently taking place.

Several forest paths allow you to walk through the area.

history

The Sonnenberg emerged as a plateau in the Saale Ice Age and formed a compression moraine during the subsequent icing phases. It is surrounded by sanders that were formed later in the Vistula Ice Age. Below the Ice Age sediments, there are sands from 12 meters deep and carbonaceous silts from the Miocene . The land has been owned by the city of Parchim since the 14th century. On Wiebeking's map from 1786, the areas are marked with forests. Peripheral locations were recorded with loose forest, especially in the south, which indicates that the hut was used . At the beginning of the 19th century, with the introduction of regulated forestry, beeches were planted, which are currently 120 to 160 years old.

Flora and fauna

The dominant tree species of the Sonnenberg is the common beech , which has extensive old wood stocks. In the protected area is the largest European Douglas fir tree , which was created in 1882 by the forester Wilhelm Evers and is the subject of forestry studies today.

Shadow flower , finger sedge , nodding pearl grass and German honeysuckle can be found in the herb layer. 39 species of breeding birds have been recorded in the area, including the green and black woodpecker , miniature flycatcher , stock dove , common raven and red kite .

Others

In the 19th century there were attempts to the stocks held in the Sonnenberg brown coal mining activities to use .
