The Weißes Moor nature reserve is a 13 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania three kilometers north of Grabow . It was placed under protection on February 3, 1958 with the aim of protecting and developing a typical rain bog .

The current state of the area is assessed as satisfactory, as the water balance was permanently disturbed by deep subsidence of the surrounding agricultural areas during the GDR era. After the pumping station was closed, the water level increased, so that immigrated woody plants slowly die off and the typical moor vegetation can spread again.

A forest path from the road between Grabow and Groß Laasch grazes the area and provides insight into the areas.

history

The moor was initially created as a swamp moor in an expulsion hollow in the surrounding post-glacial sand and dune landscape. Over time it developed into a rain moor and was not used until the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1930s, a drainage ditch was dug that drained the moor towards Elde . Edge areas in the east of the moor were used as grassland. During the GDR era, the areas were in the restricted military area . The nature reserve has been looked after by BUND since 1990 . In autumn, partial areas are mowed in order to preserve the structurally rich heather.

Flora and fauna

In the protected area you can still find the typical heather zoning from moist dwarf shrub heather, through borst grass heather to dry dwarf shrub heather. In the central part there are peat mosses as well as knotweed pondweed , mean sundew , small water hose , lung gentian , grass and onion bulrush . The occurrence of moor bear moss is worth highlighting. Large sedge and turf are currently growing on the former grassland. The edge areas of the moor are planted with a birch forest. Breeding birds in the area are crane and common snipe .
