The nature reserve Rögnitzwiesen near Neu Lübenheen was a 206 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania near Neu Lübenheen . The eponymous river course of the Rögnitz formed the western border of the areas. The designation as a protected area took place on May 15, 1990 with the aim of preserving grassland and reed areas of the Rögnitz lowlands, as these are of great importance as a resting place for birds and breeding area for waterbirds and waders .

The nature reserve was located in the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park . Today the area is located in the UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve Riverine Landscape Elbe-Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . With the passing of the "Law on the Biosphere Reserve River Landscape of the Elbe Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania" on January 15, 2015, the large protected area was divided into core, maintenance and development zones in order to implement the national criteria for the recognition and review of UNESCO biosphere reserves in Germany (Section 6 BRElbeG MV). At the same time, with Article 7 of the law "Repeal of legal provisions", the national protected area ordinances and resolutions etc. a. to landscape and nature reserves as well as to the nature park "Mecklenburgisches Elbetal", so that these protected area categories no longer exist within the biosphere reserve. The areas of the nature reserve have been given the status of care zone in the UNESCO Elbe-Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania River Landscape Biosphere Reserve. According to EU law, it is part of an FFH and bird sanctuary .

The Rögnitzwiesen were created as modern valley sand deposits, which were then moored as swamp bog. The areas were forested until the middle of the 19th century. Smaller unwooded areas were used as guarding . The nearby Elbe influenced the water balance: during floods, the backflow of the water affected the Rögnitzwiesen. From 1845 the Rögnitzwiesen were gradually drained and the Rögnitzlauf straightened. The resulting grassland was used intensively until 1991.

Flora and fauna

Rushes and sedges cover the wet meadows in the northern part, while in the south alternately moist Augrünland can be found. Typical species of the flora are swaths of water , slender sedge , cane grass , fluttering rush , marsh marigold , meadow foam herb , meadowsweet , marsh iris and speedwell .

Notable breeding birds in the area are common snipe , lapwing , quail , Montagu's harrier , ortolan , stonechat and curlew . As migratory birds may Greenshank , Wood Sandpiper , Little Grebe , Common Goldeneye , minke and whooper swan and the short-eared owl are observed. The beaver is spreading more and more over the Elbe tributaries. The otter occurs.
