The Blue Water Nature Reserve is a 10 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one kilometer east of Eldena . It is named after a small moorland in the northern part of the protected area. It was placed under protection on February 23, 1966 with the aim of protecting and developing an inland dune with a bog.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory. The originally open area has been forested in recent years. The moor water is often dried up.

A forest path enables walking in the northern part of the area. At the edge of the moor there is a resting place for hikers, where information boards provide information about the area.

history

The nature reserve is part of an extensive dune complex on the east bank of the Elde from Neustadt-Glewe to Dömitz . A swamp bog with a peat thickness of 1.3 meters developed in a blown hollow of this dune . Small peat cuttings were already being made in the area at the end of the 18th century. Adjacent pine stands were used. In the 1970s, a swath was cut for a high-voltage line south of the moor .

Flora and fauna

Typical species in the area are narrow-leaved cottongrass , cranberry , whistle grass , downy birch , pine and heather . Round-leaved sundew occurs occasionally . Rare nebulized grass lawns are interspersed with bulky rushes and awn grass . Breeding birds in the area are crested tit , tree pipit , fitis and graycatcher .
