The Rögnitz is a 52 km long left tributary of the Sude in the west of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in the east of Lower Saxony .

course

A Rögnitz spring is difficult to identify today due to drainage and canalization measures carried out since 1480. South of the Lüblow district of Neu Lüblow, the Beck meets the New Canal , is piped under it and from there flows as Rögnitz first in a southerly direction and makes a bend west of Ludwigslust to the southwest. There the Ludwigsluster Canal approaches the Rögnitz up to about 30 meters. At this point there is a distribution weir with a piped connection and, since 2009, two bypass channels that are intended to enable fish to pass through. The name of the flowing water changes sides here.

Planning for the Elde-Rögnitz-Überleiter (1986)

The Griese area is crossed further in a south-westerly direction . At Menkendorf , the Ludwigsluster Canal joins on the right , which previously ran parallel to the Rögnitz for a few kilometers. On the left side there has been an artificial water connection to the Elde , the so-called Elde-Rögnitz-Überleiter, since the 1970s .

In the region around Woosmer , the body of water curves towards the northwest, from there to Gudow it forms the border between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony and runs roughly parallel to the Elbe at a distance of seven to ten kilometers through the Elbe-Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania river landscape biosphere reserve (and the former nature reserve Rögnitzwiesen near Neu Lübheen ). At Gudow, the state border with Lower Saxony is crossed. In Sückau, which belongs to the municipality of Amt Neuhaus , the Rögnitz flows into the Sude , which in turn drains into the Elbe at Boizenburg .

Several ditches flow into the Rögnitz in its course. There are various details about the size of the catchment area, ranging from 504 to 592 km². The long-term mean flow rate is 3.7 m³ / s.

history

The river name is derived from the Old Slavic word rogŭ or rakyta for horn and means something like Hornbach.

Originally the Rögnitz originated in the "Neustädter Bürgerholze ohnweit Wöbbelin". After the Ludwigslust Canal was built, the Rögnitz was passed under it at a crossing point.

By the end of 2011, the upper Rögnitz had been renatured over a length of around 20 kilometers and in parts of the Ludwigsluster Canal by replacing weirs with bottom slides or the establishment of bypass channels. One goal was to enable fish to climb.
