S. Morris Kupchan

Solomon Morris Kupchan (born November 10, 1922 in New York , † October 19, 1976 in Boston ) was an American chemist and cancer researcher .

Career

Kupchan first studied at the College of the City of Ney York (now New York University ), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1941 . He then moved to Columbia University in New York . There he made his first Masters and 1945 he was at Robert Cooley Eldersfield working 7-chloro and 7-methoxy-8-chloro-1, 2, 3, 4-amino carbinol tetrahydrophenanthrene and derived from them a doctorate . For the next few years he worked as a research assistant at Columbia University (until 1948) and at Harvard (until 1955). In 1955 he went to the University of Wisconsin as a lecturer in the chemistry department . In 1957 he switched to the pharmacological faculty there, where he began an intensive search for new plant substances with cytostatic properties. He was the first to isolate and characterize, among other things, the maytansinoids and a number of other previously unknown natural substances . In 1969 Kupchan went to the University of Virginia , where he held the John W. Mallet Professorship until his death.
