The University of Hokkaidō ( Japanese 北海道 大学 , Hokkaidō daigaku , short: Hokudai ( 北大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Sapporo , Hokkaidō .
history
The origin of the university was the Sapporo Agricultural School ( 札幌 農 學校 , Sapporo nōgakkō ), which was founded in 1872 as a temporary school by the Development Commission ( 開拓 使 仮 學校 , Kaitakushi kari gakkō ) and renamed in 1876. The first vice-president (the real president) was William Smith Clark ; his parting words are the motto of the University of Hokkaidō today: "Boys, be ambitious!" ("Boys, be ambitious!", Japanese. 少年 よ 、 大志 を 抱 け , Shōnen yo, taishi o idake ).
The Sapporo Agricultural School was the first Japanese higher education institution that could award the title " Bachelor " ( 学士 , gakushi ). In 1903 the school moved to what is now the Sapporo campus. In 1907 she became the Agricultural College of Tōhoku Imperial University ( 東北 帝國 大學 農科 大學 , Tōhoku teikoku daigaku nōka daigaku ). In 1918 the school developed into the Imperial University of Hokkaidō ( 北海道 帝國 大學 , Hokkaidō teikoku daigaku ). At first it only had the Agricultural College (renamed in 1919: the Faculty of Agricultural Science). She founded more faculties: medicine (1919), engineering (1924), natural sciences (1930), and law and humanities (1947).
In 1947 it was renamed to today's name. In 1949, the former Hakodate Fisheries School became the Faculty of Fisheries Science.
