Mamoru Mōri ( Japanese 毛利 衛 , Mōri Mamoru; born January 29, 1948 in Yoichi , Hokkaidō , Japan ; known in the US as Mamoru "Mark" Mohri) is a former Japanese astronaut . He took part in two space shuttle missions NASA .
Mōri was born on Japan's north island of Hokkaidō, is married to Akiko Naka, who is from the same island, and has three children.
Mōri studied chemistry at the University of Hokkaidō and earned a bachelor's degree in 1970 and a master's two years later . He then went to Australia and completed a doctorate in chemistry at Flinders University in Adelaide by 1976 . Until 1985 he worked again for a decade at the University of Hokkaidō: he researched and taught at the nuclear engineering faculty , made it to an associate professor and worked in the areas of surface chemistry , high energy physics and semiconductor development .
Mōri was selected in August 1985 by the then Japanese space agency NASDA as a payload specialist. Together with Takao Doi and Chiaki Mukai , he prepared for the first Japanese -led Spacelab flight . The Spacelab-J mission was to focus on materials research and was therefore also called the “First Materials Processing Test” (FMPT).
Mōri was appointed in 1990 to participate in the STS-47 mission , with which he flew into space for the first time in 1992. Through his appearances as a teacher in the "space classroom" during the mission he came to great national fame. In 2000, Mōri took part in the STS-99 mission as the lead payload specialist .
Mōri is currently director of the Miraikan Museum of the Future in Tokyo .
