The mane perch (Caristiidae) are a family of perch-related fish that occur with 19 recent species in all seas at depths of 100 to 3600 meters.
features
Mane perch are 12 to 32 centimeters long and have a high-backed, laterally flattened body and a very blunt head. Their dorsal fin is very high with a long fin base and starts on the head. The anal fin has lost its hard rays and is supported by 17 to 22 soft rays. The pectoral fins have 16 to 21 fin rays. The long ventral fins supported by one hard and five soft rays have their base in front of or immediately behind the base of the pectoral fin. The caudal fin has 15 split rays. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven, those of the vertebrae 35 to 40.
Mane perches live with state jellyfish and also feed on parts of them.
