The Groß Upahler See , also just Upahler See , lies in a terminal moraine of the Pomeranian Stadium south of the Warnow and southwest of Güstrow. It belongs to the Sternberger Seenlandschaft in the Sternberger Seenland Nature Park . It has a roughly egg-shaped shape with a narrow, longer bay to the southwest. This is surrounded by a bog and threatens to silt up. Despite its very steep bank slopes, the water is only a little over four meters deep and thus a typical flat lake.

From the 13th century onwards, the lake was lowered by drainage towards the fog. The dry areas were used as pasture. Several water mills were in operation north of the lake until 1840. Competing ideas between farmers and millers about the height of the lake water level led to centuries of disputes. The lake is still drained to the north via the former mill streams.

The lake belongs to the nature reserve Upahler and Lenzener See in the landscape protection area "Dobbertiner Seenlandschaft and middle Mildenitztal". and to the FFH area "Forest and water landscape around Groß Upahl and Boitin". It is an oligotrophic to mesotrophic , calcareous lake.
