Stegendieksbach nature reserve

The Stegendieksbach nature reserve is a 64-hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania about one kilometer northeast of the town of Cammin .

The statutory protection took place on September 28, 1990 with an area reduction in 1995. A scenic side valley of the Recknitz is protected, which is a retreat for numerous animal species from the surrounding agricultural areas. The current state of the area is classified as satisfactory, as the hydrological conditions have been disturbed by interventions over the past decades. Forest use and nutrient inputs continue to have a disadvantageous effect.

A country road runs through the area. The more interesting southern part can be reached from Eickhof. Placed boards inform about the special features.

History and water balance

The Stegendiecksbach was created within a wavy ground moraine as a drainage channel for melt water from the last ice age . A notched valley was formed, cut up to ten meters deep in places and exhibiting a steep gradient. The variety of substrates in the creek is particularly noteworthy . There are larger stones, peat, scree, sand and gravel. The stream meanders and forms impact and sliding slopes. The nature reserve establishes the natural hydrological connection between the Göldenitz Moor and the Recknitz and is characterized by water that is highly humic.

Human settlement has been documented by large stone graves for thousands of years. For modern times, Wiebeking's map from 1786 shows a wooded brook valley and pastureland on the southern slopes facing the Recknitz. Broken forests accompanying the stream were used as coppice forest . Forestry interventions began as early as the 19th century. To the left and right of the middle reaches are intensively used fields.

Flora and fauna

Alder and ash dominate the trees in the quarry forests . At higher altitudes there is a beech forest rich in dead wood with woodruff , ringwort and lungwort . The fast flowing brook provides habitat for the river crayfish and the gill shrimp . 34 species of mammals have been identified, including dormouse , weasel and fire mouse . Remarkable bat species are Noctule , pond bat , Daubenton's bat and pipistrelle . The marsh tit , stock dove and middle woodpecker breed in the nature reserve .
