The Teufelsmoor nature reserve near Horst is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is east of the federal highway 110 between Sanitz and Ticino and north of the village of Horst. The area was designated as a nature reserve on September 28, 1990 with a reduction in 1996. The current size is 304 hectares.

The Teufelsmoor is intended to protect a comprehensive raised bog complex that lies on the watershed between Warnow and Recknitz . Embedded in the moor are the Große Teufelssee , the Kleine Teufelssee and an extensive peat cutting area in the western part.

The state of the area is rated as satisfactory. Despite the industrial peat peat, the areas offer very good conditions for the resettlement of peat-forming plants and thus for a renaturation as a near-natural raised bog complex. The dismantling of the drainage system in the entire bog is necessary for this. The occasional high populations of water birds lead to nutrient inputs.

This moor can currently only be entered as part of a guided hike after consultation with the responsible nature conservation authorities. Public roads do not exist. Every year hikes are offered by the landowner, the Foundation for Environmental and Nature Conservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

History and water balance

The area was created in a drainless depression in the ground moraine of the last glaciation . A lake formed after the ice thawed and silted up in the following millennia. A rain bog began to develop. As recently as 1786, Wiebeking's map shows the moor as forest-free pastureland. In the 19th century peat mining began by local farmers, which was continued on a large scale and in an industrial style until 1990 after the Second World War. Drainage ditches were drawn.

Flora and fauna

Due to the rewetting, peat-forming vegetation can spread again. Peat moss , cotton grass , bell heather , club bear moss and round-leaved sundew occur.

21 dragonfly species have been identified, including Nordic Moss Maiden , Quadruple , Shiny Emerald Dragonfly , Spear Azure Maiden , Horseshoe Azure Maiden , Bat Azure Maiden, and Moon Azure Maiden .

The Teufelsmoor with the two lakes and the rewetted areas is an important habitat for birds. Black-headed gulls and terns breed in a colony. Common Snipe , Black Tern , Common Tern , Ringed Plover , Lapwing , Common Crane , Common Teal , Common Goldeneye and Red-necked Grebe breeding continues. The breeding record for the stilt from 1999 is particularly noteworthy . Resting birds are the shoveler , marsh harrier , turnstone , curlew , black godwit , dunlin , ruff and redshank come to rest in this bird paradise.

Adder and grass snake live in the area.
