The Kösterbeck nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , which was designated in 1986. The area was expanded in 1990 and reduced in size on June 13, 1995. It is named after the Kösterbeck brook flowing through the area from east to west , a tributary of the Warnow and the district of the Roggentin community .

The aim of the protection is to maintain and develop a strongly reliefed moraine landscape in Rostock Switzerland with a stream system and adjoining grasslands, spring moors and wet meadows.

The condition of the area is classified as good, whereby nutrient inputs into the areas lead to impairments. According to EU law, the nature reserve is designated as part of the FFH area Warnowtal with small tributaries .

The nature reserve can be hiked through from Roggentin, Kösterbeck and Fresendorf. Every season offers not only beautiful landscape impressions, but also numerous natural experiences.

The former Dishley landscape maintenance farm (liquidated 2002/2003), a project of the landscape maintenance association “Unteres Warnowland” e. V., had made the maintenance, preservation and professional supervision of the nature reserve its task. The farm's employees cultivated around 100 hectares of grassland in the area of the two nature reserves “Kösterbeck” and “Lower Warnowland”. With the help of special technology and a flock of around 400 sheep, including 80 breeding animals of the rare landrace Rauhwolliges Pommersches Landschaf , the farm made an interesting contribution to professional landscape maintenance in these areas. The project was discontinued with the liquidation of the association.

history

The nature reserve is a compression moraine area that was created by the last ice age .

Kösterbeck was already densely inhabited in Slavic times (800–1000). The well-preserved Schlossberg von Fresendorf (castle wall of the Slavic castle) and a nearby barrow testify to this . This area has been largely free of forests since the end of the Middle Ages and has been used as pasture for centuries. Continuous grazing kept the landscape open. There was a socialization of mainly light and warmth, drought-bearing and pasture-proof plant species and a correspondingly adapted animal world.

Flora and fauna

This erosion landscape with many elevations and depressions led to very different site conditions in a limited area and thus to a diverse flora and fauna. This diversity of habitats left on the slopes dry grasslands , among others with the plant species Bulbous Buttercup , Reddish cinquefoil , mountain clover and in the valleys wetlands, among others Trollblumen , Duftprimel , Bistort arise. Numerous species of dragonflies , hoverflies , butterflies and birds such as goldhammer and red backed killer live here . In the lower elevations, wet meadows with cabbage thistle and sedges can be found.

Lampreys , brown trout and sea trout as well as wolffish and burbot live in the Kösterbeck . The occurrence of the highly endangered river mussel Unio crassus is also worth highlighting . Littered in the southeast part are wet meadows with large sedge .
