Hans Günther Mukarovsky

Hans Günther Mukarovsky (born October 2, 1922 in Vienna ; † November 29, 1992 there ) was an Austrian Africanist .

Life

Mukarovsky studied African studies with ethnology and Arabic at the University of Vienna under Wilhelm Czermak from 1940 to 1948 , interrupted from 1941 by military service in the German armed forces as an interpreter and from 1944 by British prisoners of war, where he was employed by the Austrian editorial staff of the BBC .

During his studies, Mukarovsky wrote articles for the magazines Die Furche and Wort und Truth . After completing his studies, he worked for the Federal Press Service in the Federal Chancellery and subsequently became a full university professor for African Studies and founder of the Institute for African Studies at the University of Vienna.

Mukarovsky was also a poet and published poems in magazines and on ORF .
