Setup date 1975

The Zahrensee nature reserve near Dabelow is a 10 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania not far north of the Carolinenhof settlement. The eponymous place Dabelow is one kilometer north. It was placed under protection on March 2, 1972 with the aim of preserving an artificially deeply sunken lake with adjacent bog areas.

The nature reserve is located in the southwestern part of the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park and is classified as an FFH area under EU law .

The current state of the area is viewed as unsatisfactory, as the lowering of the water level in the past brought extensive nutrients into the lake and had a negative effect on its condition. The adjacent bog areas were also extensively affected.

Part of the area belongs to the Foundation for the Environment and Nature Conservation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

There are no public roads in the area.

history

The areas lie in a sand landscape that was created in the last Ice Age . The Zahrensee lies in a post-glacial runoff from meltwater. The Schmettausche map from 1788 shows the lake with an area of approximately 12 hectares. The lake was lined with alders on the north bank and a flow moor on the south bank . Influences on the lake water level began in the 19th century with the creation of trenches towards Dabelow and later towards the south. The area of the lake was reduced to 6 hectares in 1940. The dry moorland decomposed and released large amounts of nutrients that ended up in the lake. The current water area is only one hectare. In 1997 an attempt was made to raise the water level of the lake again by building a dam.

Flora and fauna

The remaining lake area is occupied by reeds and cattails . Remnants of the bog rich in peat moss can be found around the lake. To the west, bushes of willow and alder adjoin .

Breeding birds in the area are Crane , Gray Goose , Common Goldeneye , warbler , bittern , woodcock , reed warblers , marsh harriers , reed bunting and Water Rail . Moor frog and otter occur. Numerous species of dragonflies also live in the area, including the great moss maiden and the spear maiden .
