The Kalkhorst nature reserve is a 78 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania four kilometers southwest of Neustrelitz . It was placed under protection on July 15, 1957 with the purpose of protecting and developing an old deciduous forest on moist, sandy locations and a bog in it. The reserve was reduced in size in 1961.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory, as the water balance of the areas has been severely disturbed by drainage measures and forestry is used in some areas.

Forest paths in the east and south of the area provide insight into the areas. There is a natural history trail from the Kalkhorst forestry to the Tiefer Trebbow water bird observatory.

history

The protected area is embedded in a sand landscape created during the Ice Age . Dead ice forms formed the moist Kalkhorst lowland, which was then filled by a lake. Sea chalk and limestone deposits were extensive. Of the original three surrounding lakes, only the deep Trebbower See lake to the south currently exists after the water level has dropped . Dune sands indicate that the areas are temporarily open. The Kalkhorst moss. In the 17th century, the limestone deposits of the former lake were dismantled and used in a lime kiln, which was located near today's forestry department. From the 18th century the Kalkhorst was a popular destination for the Princely Family of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She decreed that the forest should be transformed into a park. As a result, spruce, Douglas fir, larch and pine were planted. After placing the area under protection, the areas are now treated as a natural forest reserve.

Flora and fauna

The tree species mainly represented are pine, birch and beech, the latter only being able to immigrate after extensive drainage. The beech forest has onion-tooth root , spring pea , liverwort and broad-leaved sitter as an undergrowth . In the center of the protected area, a bog part with is wild rosemary and Trunkelbeere . Rare species such as the white forest bird , red forest bird , nest root , coral root and large double leaf that were still detected in the 1980s have now disappeared.

89 species of breeding birds were identified, including stock dove , tawny owl , black and middle woodpecker and a colony of jackdaws.
