The Hinrichshagen nature reserve is a 1124 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It comprises a large beech forest area with interspersed wetlands south of federal highway 198, three kilometers southwest of Woldegk . The area is named after the town not far to the north.

The protected area was legally established on October 25, 1962 due to its outstanding importance as a breeding ground for numerous species of large birds that are now rare and threatened with extinction.

The nature reserve is located in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park and is classified as an FFH area and bird sanctuary under EU law . The south-western part of the protected area is being investigated as a natural forest reserve .

The current state of the area is considered to be very good. The water balance of the wetter areas was stabilized again through numerous interventions. The condition of the beech forests is unsatisfactory, as there is extensive forestry interest in the old wood. The targeted reduction in waste wood through removal has negative effects on species worth preserving, as exemplified by the decrease in the number of breeding pairs in the Lesser Spotted Eagle .

There are few public roads in the area. The reserve crosses a paved road. A circular hiking trail leads from Hinrichshagen to Vorheide and Neugarten.

history

The areas lie in a ground moraine area that was shaped by the last Ice Age . A barrow in the southern part shows the first human settlement in the Stone Age . In the Middle Ages, there was a Wendish-Early German settlement north of the road to Grauenhagen, of which only a church ruin is evidence today. The settlement was probably destroyed in the 14th century during the Margrave War. The surrounding fields were then reforested. The Schmettausche map from 1780 already shows the current tree line. Since no other localities are recorded apart from the settlement mentioned, it can be assumed that the areas of the Hinrichshagen nature reserve have been permanently covered with forest since the post-glacial settlements. The use of the forest was initially limited to the economy of small wood. From the 19th century, the drainless sinks were connected to a network of ditches and drained. These interventions, which were detrimental to the nature reserve, were only gradually reversed from the 1990s.

Flora and fauna

The entire area is covered with forest, which has different ages up to 240 years old stands. The defining tree species is the common beech . Plants such as angular sedge , lady fern , forest violet , wood anemone , golden nettle and forest sedge cover the ground . The humid depressions are taken up by mossed small bodies of water, in places with typical trees. Cattails and reeds are found. In some places there are peat moss - vibrating lawns . Orchids such as broad-leaved sitters , pale forest birds , avian avens and white forest hyacinths can also be found - especially at the edges of water.

Due to its importance as a breeding ground for numerous bird species, the reserve was designated. The occurrences of sea eagles and lesser spotted eagles, red and black kites , sparrowhawks , goshawks as well as wasp and common buzzards should be emphasized . By the old trees rare, bound thereto species occur as black stork , red-breasted flycatcher , Common Goldeneye , Dove , Crane , black and middle spotted woodpecker .

Mammals in the area include red deer , wild boar, and otters . The amphibian fauna is represented by fire-bellied toad , tree , moor and common frog , crested newt and pond newt , as well as garlic and common toads . 19 species of dragonflies have been identified in the area, including peat moss damsel , moon azure damsel as well as great moss damsel and Nordic moss damsel .
