The Nonnenbachtal nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The area covers the course of the Nonnenbach from Wanzka-Mühle to the crossing of the federal highway 96 north of Usadel . The legal protection took place on July 15, 1957 with an area expansion in 1993. The protection goal consists in the preservation of a fast flowing stream with its communities as well as the adjacent valley slopes as a typical section of the east Mecklenburg terminal moraine landscape.

The state of the area is classified as satisfactory, as the Nonnenbach is divided into four, largely isolated, stream sections and nutrient inputs have a negative effect. The flow through the main road is still not continuous for brown trout , brown lamprey and otters .

The nature reserve can be accessed on a hiking trail from Usadel to Wanzkaer Mühle.

Together with the Nonnenbachtal nature reserve, the surrounding nature reserves Ziemenbachtal , Hellberge , Nonnenhof and Rosenholz and Zippelower Bachtal form a representative section of the landscape of the upper Tollensebecken.

history

The Nonnenbach is cut 10 to 20 meters deep in a notch valley that was formed by receding erosion when the inland glacier melted during the last Ice Age . In the Middle Ages, the Nonnenbach served to operate several water mills that produced grain, oil and powder. There was also an ironworks, which was converted into the most important paper mill in the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in the 18th century. The mill operation was stopped in 1956. The buildings fell into disrepair.

The surrounding forest was classified as a total reserve and was not used.

Flora and fauna

The breeding birds in the area are the gray wagtail and the kingfisher . The dipper can be observed as a migrant. The occurrence of brown lamprey and brown trout as well as the highly endangered mollusks such as pea clams , triangular pea clams, ear mud snails , river limpets and lentil-shaped poppy snails are significant .
