It is located two kilometers northwest of Klocksin and is part of the Mecklenburg Switzerland and Kummerower See nature park . It was placed under protection on October 13, 1939. The state of the area is regarded as good due to the fact that it is undisturbed. The protected area areas cannot be entered, but there are viewing opportunities from the former small railway embankment that grazes the protected area to the north.

History and water balance

The Hellgrund emerged as an erosion valley after the end of the last ice age . The springs that have risen in Hellgrund for thousands of years led to the deposition of peat and sand muds up to six meters thick . The iron content of the water colors the areas of the seepage springs red, as iron ocher precipitates. Hard calcareous sinter layers are deposited at the bottom of some source streams . The source streams unite in the middle of the valley to form the Hellbach, which flows northwards from the protected area and flows into the Westpeene .

The history of use in the area can be documented for the first time in 1788 on the Schmettauschen map . The areas were used as grassland, with forest growing on the southeastern valley floor. At the beginning of the 20th century, today's forest distribution came about. The eastern side of the valley was wooded, while the grassland areas are limited to the western side of the valley. These areas are currently also forested.

Flora and fauna

Large parts of the protected area are planted with alder-ash spring forest, which is protected as a habitat type according to the Habitats Directive . The extensive occurrence of giant horsetail is worth highlighting . Brown trout and brown lamprey live in the source streams . Food guests in the area are the common swirl , black stork , dipper and gray wagtail .
