Giorgio Orelli (born May 25, 1921 in Airolo , Canton Ticino ; † November 10, 2013 in Ravecchia , Canton Ticino) was a Swiss writer , literary critic and translator .

Life

Giorgio Orelli was a cousin of the Ticino novelist and poet Giovanni Orelli . After studying in Friborg , Giorgio Orelli moved to Bellinzona , where he taught Italian literature until 1982 , first at the Scuola cantonale di commercio (cantonal commercial school), where the poet Pericle Patocchi also taught, and later at the Liceo cantonale ( Canton school).

Most of his works - mainly poetry and essays - have been translated into German. Orelli himself translated a selection of poems by Goethe in 1957 and poems by Andri Peer into Italian in 1975 .

For his 80th birthday in 2001 , Hans Ulrich Lehmann set poems to music under the title Partita di ritorno su poesie di Giorgio Orelli , a work for baritone, bass clarinet and violoncello. Other interpreters of Orelli's poems included a. Lucio Dalla .

In 2014, the village square in Prato Leventina was renamed “Piazza Giorgio Orelli”, and since 2018 the city of Bellinzona has been awarding the “Premio Giorgio Orelli - Città di Bellinzona” alternately to a poet or a literary critic.
