The Mittelsee nature reserve near Langwitz is a 15 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania five kilometers south of Malchin and not far north of Langwitz . It was placed under protection on April 14, 1954 with the aim of protecting and developing a Kesselmoorkolk with open water surface and a rocking bog with siltation belt.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory because the water balance of the areas is disturbed. The wet meadows adjacent to the north are used intensively for agriculture and drained. An atypical fish stocking by anglers also has a disadvantageous effect, which, in addition to falsifying the fauna, also leads to eutrophication of the water and significant damage caused by being stepped on.

A hiking trail from Langwitz to Basedow grazes the area and offers very good opportunities to view the areas.

history

The middle lake emerged from a form of dead ice in a basin that was originally without drainage. In the 19th century the water area was 8 hectares. Schwingmoordecke and a wide silting zone as well as a rain moor with a scour could develop. Land use was markedly intensified in the 1960s. Drainage ditches flowing in the direction of the Ostpeene were drawn through the adjacent wet meadows in order to graze the areas, so that the lake initially shrank. As the peat subsided in a row, the lake level increased again. Currently, half of the grassland is still used as pasture.

To the north of the lake is the Langwitz stone box .

Flora and fauna

In the 19th century, the central lake was known nationwide for numerous important plants: small pond rose , beach lily , marsh softwort and common heart spoon appeared, but disappeared until the 1980s. The water surface of the middle lake is covered with cattails , cypress-sedge and marsh fern . Crab claw grows in the northern rocking bog area. Sedge reeds close on the land side and merge into gray willow bushes .

The sanctuary is home to 20 species of dragonflies, including the little rush damsel , the big moss damsel and the green moss damsel . Breeding attempts have been observed by numerous species of birds, but these were often stopped by the pressure of disturbance from anglers. Ospreys and tree falcons use the central lake as a hunting ground.
