history

The nature reserve is part of an ice age train stretching over 35 kilometers from Stavenhagen to Varchentin . Typical features of an Oses can be read from the two Os trenches and a pressed core made of till clay. The two chalk clods in the northern part were reduced in size by excavations. Originally scattered boulders in the area were piled up to form reading stone walls. The largest boulder is the Teufelsstein in the northern part. A local legend tries to explain the origin of the stone.

The areas have been used as sheep pasture since the Middle Ages. The Swedish matriculation card from 1698 shows several grazed strips with different owners. Before the area was protected, gravel and chalk were mined. Grazing animals in GDR times were young cattle and sheep. As the grazing intensity decreased, trees such as sloe , rose , hawthorn , oak and ash could spread. Grazing was intensified again in the 1990s. Furthermore, the removal of trees helped achieve the actual protective purpose.

Flora and fauna

245 plant species have been identified in the area. Carnation , sheep fescue and crested grass are typical representatives in addition to numerous woody species. There is a wet meadow interspersed with sedges and rushes . Lichen and moss have settled on the reading stone walls . Along the Osgräben there are wet pastures with broad-leaved orchid , adder 's tongue , devil's bite , globe flower , marsh Pippau and yellow meadow rue .

Breeding birds in the area are red backed killer and black hawk warbler .
