The Hellberge nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, east of the village of Wendfeld . The area includes the 800 meter long Hellberge range with adjacent wetlands. The federal highway 96 forms the eastern border. The legal protection took place on September 29, 1977 with an area expansion in 1994. The protection goal consists in the preservation of a pasture landscape with a rich vegetation mosaic as a typical section of the east Mecklenburg terminal moraine landscape. The name Hell is derived from an original designation of the word oblique or pendent .

The state of the area is rated as good.

The nature reserve can be accessed in several ways. The Hellberge offer a very good view from the central ridge with a large boulder dedicated to the nature observer Walter Gotsmann .

Together with the Hellberge nature reserve, the surrounding nature reserves Ziemenbachtal , Nonnenbachtal , Nonnenhof and Rosenholz and Zippelower Bachtal form a representative section of the landscape of the upper Tollensebecken.

history

The Hellberge were created by the last ice age . The ridge is interpreted as a terminal moraine or Os , which is indicated by the stratification of sand, gravel and boulder clay. Spring water escapes at the foot of the western slope, which led to the formation of the Caarssee and small-scale spring moors. The Hellberge have been used for centuries. The boulders were used as building material, the meadows as sheep pasture. In 1788, the areas were without trees, as the Schmettausche map shows. The sheep pasture was operated with less intensity from 1945. Today the area is a popular excursion destination, from which there are very good views of the Tollensee basin.

Flora and fauna

Typical for the area are dry grasslands with sheep fescue , upright brusque , thyme , stonecrop and nodule saxifrage . The five-man Spark has the only occurrence in the country in the Hellberg Mountains. Due to the low intensity of grazing, the areas are covered in bushes with pines , birches , sloes and broom . In more humid locations - especially on the western and northern slopes, there are spring moors with valerian , foam herb , swamp sedge , four-leaved oneberry and swamp pippau . They are lined with black alders . Breeding birds in the area are skylark , blackcatcher , barnacle warbler , goldenhammer and red backed killer .
