The nature reserve Altwarper Binnendünen, Neuwarper See and Riether Werder is a 1460 hectare nature reserve in the east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is part of the Am Stettiner Haff nature park . The designation took place on September 10, 1990 with the aim of preserving the coastal landscape on the Oderhaff with interspersed inland dunes , part of the lake area of the Neuwarper See and the offshore island of Riether Werder . The surrounding villages are Altwarp , Rieth , Hedwigshof and Rehhagen. Due to the remote location in the border area with Poland and the associated minor disturbance, the state of the area is assessed as good. However, embankments impair the peatland areas for which the dike removal is planned in the future. The inland dunes are subject to succession without further intervention . The area is supported by the Uecker-Randow-Region e. V. supervised. The area can be opened up to hikers both north of Altwarp and south of Rieth. In Rehhagen there is an observation pulpit on the shores of Lake Neuwarper, which offers an overview of the coastal region.

The nature reserve is almost congruent with the FFH area of the same name .

history

The area was decisively shaped by the last glaciation over 10,000 years ago and the subsequent centuries-long thawing period. The melt water flowing from the Uecker and Randow valleys accumulated over a length of 35 kilometers to form a Haff reservoir . Fine-grained basin sands settled in several meters thick layers, which were then piled up to form the up to 15 meter high dunes near Altwarp by subsequent wind shifting. To the south there is a moored lowland area, which today, as a floodplain with up to two meters thick peat layers, takes up a large part of the protected area area. The areas are only just above sea level and were regularly flooded by the water of the Oderhaff. The forests of the Altwarp peninsula on the Schmettauschen map from 1780 were created through afforestation in the 18th century. Since the 1930s, the area has been used for military purposes. Practice was stopped in 1990. During the GDR era, part of the area was diked for agricultural use and is actively drained by three pumping stations. Today the areas are grazed extensively.

Flora and fauna

The dune areas at Altwarp cover silver grass , sheep fescue , blue-green schiller grass , mountain hairline and Karthauser carnation . The endangered chervil ant Formica foreli lives on the dunes . In front of the lake are meadows rich in sedge and rushes with broad-leaved orchid , cuckoo's carnation and beach tri-ax , which merge into an extensive reed bed. To the south and west of the dunes there is an oak coppice with heat-exposed grassland . Reforested pine forest on mineral soil . In between there are small areas of sour bogs with narrow-leaved cotton grass , pennywort and peat moss . Particularly noteworthy breeding birds in the area are white-tailed eagles , red-backed killer , black-backed warbler , bearded tit , great- reed warbler , carmine and crane . On the Riether Werder there is a black-headed gull colony and numerous limicoles such as snipe , ruff , redshank and black godwit . The otter lives in the area.

Ownership

The polder areas in Rehhagen were partly bought by the Foundation for Environment and Nature, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in order to enable the dike to be removed.
