About this picture

Altwarp is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany), which is administered by the Am Stettiner Haff office based in Eggesin .

geography

Altwarp is located in the far east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , on the maritime border with the Republic of Poland , making it Germany's most northeastern mainland point. The area around Altwarp forms a peninsula on the south bank of the Stettiner Haffes , at the narrow entrance to the Neuwarper See . 800 meters southwest of Altwarp is the approximately 0.35 hectare large water body "Großes Moor". The only neighboring community of Altwarp is Vogelsang-Warsin in the southwest. There is a sandy beach near the town center.

The landscape on the lagoon is wooded. In addition to tourism, fishing and the port determine what is happening in the village.

The settlement Altwarp belongs to the municipality.

history

Altwarp was first mentioned in a document in 1136. The word warp means anchorage. In 1848 there were five merchant ships at Altwarp.

From 1938 to 1945 the community was a military training area with a sea-to-air firing range, units of the Africa Corps were briefly located here . The entire village had to be evacuated and the inhabitants were relocated to Neuwarp (now Nowe Warpno ). Only a few employees of the Wehrmacht stayed in Altwarp. In addition to three barracks for troops, there was a prisoner-of-war camp in Altwarp as a sub - camp of the IID main camp in Stargard in Pomerania for French, Belgian and Soviet, and later also Italian, prisoners of war. In 1944 units of the Vlasow Army were trained in Altwarp. After a short period of use by the Red Army in May / June 1945, the camps were used as quarantine camps for refugees from 1946 to 1947, mainly from the Czech districts of Aussig and Reichenberg in the Sudetenland.

After the Second World War , the residents returned.

On July 1, 1950, Altwarp was incorporated into Vogelsang. On January 1, 1951, it was spun off from the Vogelsang community again.

From 1952 Altwarp was again a military location. Parts of an NVA tank division were stationed here until 1961 , followed by an anti-aircraft missile division and air defense units. After the German reunification , the location was closed in 1991.

Transport links

Former border station

Altwarp is around 15 kilometers from Ueckermünde , where there is also a rail connection .

In 1991 duty-free traffic to Poland was introduced. In 1996 there was a brisk “ butter ship traffic ” from Altwarp to Nowe Warpno. In 1996 the shipping company Adler-Schiff took over the traffic, a newly built ferry pier expanded the offer.

In 1999, with the construction of a new ferry port, a ferry option for vehicles from Altwarp to Nowe Warpno was created. The newly completed ferry port with border station was no longer in operation. In 2004 Poland joined the EU and duty-free traffic ended. This halved the number of ferries and ships were withdrawn. With the accession to the Schengen Agreement in 2007, border controls ended. Passenger traffic continued to decline. Therefore, shipping was temporarily abandoned from 2011 and resumed in 2012 by a new provider with the old fishing trawler Lütt Matten .
