Location of the municipality of Tutow in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district | ||
Tutow is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Until the end of December 2003, the municipality was the seat of the Tutow Office and has been part of the Jarmen-Tutow Office since then . The place owes its existence to the Tutow airfield, which was built in the 1930s .
Geography and traffic
Tutow is located about eight kilometers west of Jarmen and about 16 kilometers east of Demmin in the Pomeranian part of the country. The Kuckucksgraben flows at the municipal boundary in the direction of Peene . The small community area is characterized by the Tutower airfield. The artificial casino lake is adjacent to this . Occasionally there are small forest areas. The federal highway 110 runs along the southeastern municipal boundary. The place is about connecting Jarmen of Highway 20 to get to.
history
The area around the place was already settled in the Stone Age, as evidenced by a large stone grave near Marienfelde . South of the B 110 is an old Slavic rampart with an area of about two hectares, the " Old City ". To the west of it there is a Yugoslav castle wall, the " Alte Schanze ", usually called "Wallberg". This is located in an inaccessible swamp area, the "Quebbe", which is fed by the cuckoo's moat. The younger fortification was probably destroyed in the 13th century. At the same time, the towns of Kruckow and Tutow (today: Tutow-Dorf ) were built nearby .
The current town of Tutow itself was only created in the 1930s as a settlement when the airfield was built. The former Kruckower Vorwerk Wittenwerder was demolished in 1933 when the Tutow airfield was being built. On October 1, 1938, the place was officially named Tutow / Airport . Before and during the Second World War , a squadron of fighter pilots was stationed here. One of the largest fighter pilot schools in the German Reich was also located here. The Fw 190 were finally assembled in a branch of the Arado factory in Tutow .
After the war, most of the airfield buildings were demolished by the Soviet Army , but the airfield was used by the NVA and the Soviet Army. The NVA had paratroopers stationed in Tutow. From 1985 the airfield area was used by the Soviet Army alone. In 1986 apartments, a school and other social and functional buildings were built before an attack aircraft regiment from the Cottbus area was stationed here. In 1994 the last soldiers of the GSSD left the garrison. The community then took over the prefabricated prefabricated building district, which was previously used by the military, from the Treuhand and offered the apartments cheaply. The population rose from just under 1,300 in 1993 to around 2,250 in 1994. Since then, the population has been falling continuously due to high unemployment (up to 70%). In part, the empty prefabricated buildings on the area that was previously used by the military were dismantled with funding from the federal and state governments.
A canning factory was set up in 1946 in an incomplete multi-purpose building directly on the B 110, which was planned as a hotel with a café and cinema. This was expropriated in 1952 and from 1974 carried the name " VEB Nordfrucht". In addition to canned fruits and vegetables also was here mustard paste produced. The mustard produced in Loitz before the nationalization became known nationwide as "Tutower mustard". After the fall of the Wall , the canning factory was privatized and changed hands several times. Eventually production was relocated to Stavenhagen and the factory closed. The mustard will continue to be offered under the “Tutower Senf” brand.
In 2010, the GDR Museum Tutow, which was previously located on the edge of the airfield, moved into the former canning factory.
Designated commercial space was removed from the development plan due to a lack of demand. The local discounter closed in January 2006, Sparkasse branches and butchers have been closed for several years. In the 2005/2006 school year, the Tutow secondary and secondary school became a branch of the Jarmen school in order to preserve the location.
A lack of perspective was an issue several times when Tutow was treated in the national media.
