About this picture
Alt Tellin municipality and the Tollense valley 1880

Alt Tellin is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district . Until January 1, 2004, the community was part of the Tutow Office and has been part of the Jarmen-Tutow Office since then .

geography

Geographical location

Alt Tellin is 12 kilometers southwest of Jarmen and 16 kilometers southeast of Demmin . The Tollense flows through the municipality . The municipal areas to the north of the Tollense are at a height of 20 meters above sea level and the southern parts of the municipality 50 to 60 meters above sea level. While the glacial valley of the Tollense is almost at sea level, the Buchholzer Heights reach 82.3 meters above sea level. The bank of the glacial valley south of the Tollense rises relatively steeply from 1.0 to 50 meters. The steep slopes in the Buchholz area have many erosion channels (called Liten in Western Pomerania), these were mostly accessible or drivable through ravines, the avenues planted around 1880 have now developed into wooded gorges, the paths have been abandoned.

Piglet rearing facility Alt Tellin
Construction site of the piglet rearing facility

In 2008 the plans of a Dutch investor to build a sow and piglet rearing facility in the municipality south of Neu Plötz became known for the first time. This facility, which has been controversial among the population from the start, is to become the largest pig breeding facility in Europe with an annual production of 250,000 piglets. Residents founded the “Citizens' Initiative Leben am Tollensetal” and, together with various regional and supra-regional organizations, are trying to prevent the system from being built through demonstrations and legal action. In the fall of 2010, the State Office for Agriculture and the Environment granted permission to build the facility. The plant has now been put into operation.

traffic

The L 35 - former federal highway 96 runs east and the federal highway 110 north of the community. The place can be reached via the Jarmen junction of the federal motorway 20 . Otherwise the districts are connected by county and municipal roads.

From 1897 to 1945 the Demminer Kleinbahnen Ost (DKBO) operated in what is now the municipality. Coming from Demmin, it split near Schmarsow and led north to Jarmen and south past the east to Alt Tellin and on to Altentreptow. It was dismantled in 1945 as a reparation.
