About this picture

Nieden is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in the east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It is administered by the Uecker-Randow-Tal office based in the city of Pasewalk .

geography

The municipality of Nieden, one of the smallest in the district, lies on the flat slope of a terminal moraine that stretches in a north-south direction on the east bank of the Uecker . The place directly on the state border with Brandenburg is about halfway between the cities of Pasewalk and Prenzlau .

Nieden is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Rollwitz in the north and east, Göritz in the south and Uckerland in the west.

history

The first documentary mention of Nedam dates back to 1121. Nieden had been an important Slavic fortress since the 6th century . Nieden was repeatedly affected by Polish armies. The Duke of Pomerania had a permanent house built, "dat permanent Hus to Nedam", to secure the Uecker ford. The village was called Nedam in 1320, Nydem in the land register of Emperor Charles IV from 1375 and is now called Nieden. Apparently the fortress Nedam (also Nadam) formed the old castle of the Uckerland, in the place of which Prenzlau and Pasewalk rose after its destruction.

As a Markbrandenburg fiefdom it was owned by the von Lindstedt family and by inheritance from around 1600 owned by the von Winterfeld family . Originally the manor Nieden belonged together with the manors Schmarsow, Damerow, Spiegelberg, Rollwitz and Züsedom including the respective church patronage to a property complex of the von Winterfeld family. In Nieden, instead of an old manor house, the family built a historicizing castle made entirely of field stones with a handsome round tower and bell-like dome in a park covering several hectares on the river Uecker. In 1945 the castle burned down. The family farms the land to this day.

On July 25, 1952, Nieden was detached from the Brandenburg district of Prenzlau , which was Prussian until 1945 , and assigned to the Pasewalk district in the Neubrandenburg district .

Several associations are based in Nieden, for example the Nieden Church and Village Friends Association, the fishing club and the volunteer fire brigade.

Conquered and destroyed in 1121. This was reported by one of the vites of Bishop Otto von Bamberg.
