As historicizing are reconstructions designated tasks or objects of earlier eras that are not consistent in certain details with the original and give the impression to the layman to be a historically documented reconstruction or even an original.

The medieval scene with its markets can be used as a concise example . The clothing of many performers and visitors is historicizing as they are made from modern materials and contain fantasy elements. The clothing therefore does not correspond to the time shown.

In particular, historicizing building , even in the form of reconstructions that are true to the original , is the subject of controversy among architects . The listed castle courtyard from 1909/10 in Flensburg , which was designed by the architect Paul Ziegler, is an example of early historicizing construction . A prominent example of historicizing construction is the reconstruction of the Flemish old town of Ypres after its destruction in the First World War.

The area between Berlin-Mitte and the Brandenburg Gate up to the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace can be used as a current example . Here, developments of different architectural conceptions in West and East Berlin as well as after the reunification up to the present day between the representatives of the European city and modern architecture can be clearly seen.
