The Paulsen Holding GmbH , formerly Eagle ships mbH , is a German shipping company based in Westerland on Sylt , which under the brand name Eagle ships primarily excursion traffic on the German North and Baltic Sea coast runs. With more than 25 passenger ships , the shipping company is the largest provider of excursions and ship charters on the German coast.
history
The North Frisian , family-owned island and Halligreederei was founded on May 1, 1950 by the Hooger fisherman Kurt Paulsen. On Pentecost Sunday 1950 he took guests on board his fishing boat for the first time . The maiden voyage led from Nordstrand to Nordstrandischmoor . After that, excursions for vacationers were regularly offered and additional ships were put into service. The company's first new building was the Adler passenger ship, which was delivered in 1961 and had space for 50 passengers. In the 1970s, the shipping company ordered several passenger ships from the Husum shipyard, in particular to carry out butter trips .
The shipping company has been run by Sven Paulsen, Kurt Paulsen's son, since 1986. Under him, the company expanded into many new shipping areas. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, the fleet became significantly larger, as it was also used in eastern German areas . The islands of Usedom and Rügen as well as the Western Pomerania border town Altwarp became new areas of application.
At the beginning of June 1993, the shipping company put the fastest single-hull passenger ship in Germany into service, the Adler-Express . It is one of two per 1260 kW paid MTU - marine diesel engines fed Waterjet equipped drive system and has a top speed of 33 knots .
In 1995 Sven Paulsen took over the Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft , which operates local public transport with several bus routes on the island of Sylt .
About two Part shipping companies Eagle ships acquired in July 1998, two hydrofoils of the type Boeing 929 , previously from a Belgian shipping company in scheduled service from Ostend to Dover and Ramsgate were operated. Although they were named Adler Blizzard and Adler Wizard , they were not used by Adler ships. In the summer of 1998, Sven Paulsen helped found the West Palm Beach (USA) -based shipping company Seajets, which the American businessman George Bradley took over as head. The two hydrofoils were transferred to Florida in the summer of 1999 and chartered to Seajets. From autumn 1999 they came into use under the names Seajet Kara and Seajet Kirsten between West Palm Beach and Freeport (Bahamas) . Both ships were sold to Japan in October 2001.
On January 2nd, 2010 Adler-Schiff GmbH took over the Wismar-based company Reederei Clermont GbR, founded on June 1st, 1990 with the four passenger ships Mecklenburg , Insel Poel , Hanseatic City of Wismar and Hanseat . The ships are used for harbor tours in Wismar, excursions to the Wismar Bay and to the island of Poel . In the same year shipping from Altwarp was stopped.
In June 2011 the shipping company bought a motor yacht , the Merkur II, from HSH Nordbank .
In spring 2013, the company took over the Ostsee-Tour shipping company on the island of Rügen with the two passenger ships Cap Arkona and Binz .
In 2017, Adler-Schiff acquired the Sylter Seebestattungsreederei along with its ship Ekke Nekkepen . The funeral shipping company will continue to operate as a subsidiary. In the same year, Sven Paulsen and North Frisian Offshore GmbH founded German Fast Ferry GmbH & Co. KG, through which the Adler Cat catamaran was acquired in December 2017 .
At the beginning of 2019, the shipping company Rahder based in Büsum and its four ships Lady von Büsum , Ol Büsum , Hauke and Hein Mück were taken over by German Fast Ferry. On February 18, 2019, the shipping companies Adler-Schiff and Cassen Eils announced the establishment of the joint company Adler & Eils GmbH & Co. KG, through which they have been working together in Büsum since then. The four former Rahder ships were transferred to the new company and then used for excursions. The shipping company Cassen Eils brought the Funny Girl into the joint company, which is used in the liner service from Büsum to Heligoland.
Passenger and ferry traffic from Altwarp
From 1992 to 2010 the Adler shipping company was active in the border town of Altwarp on the Stettiner Haff , from where shopping trips to the nearby Polish waters were undertaken. Until Poland joined the EU in 2004, duty-free sales took place on board , so the trips were well attended. From 1992 Eagle ships put first the excursion boat Eagle VI from Altwarp one, one year later, in addition, the Eagle X . The Adler VI was replaced in 1995 by the Adler Princess . In 1996 Adler-Ships opened a ferry line between Altwarp and Nowe Warpno (Neuwarp) in Poland . The two car ferries Adler Polonia and Adler Pomerania were used on this line . In addition, there continued to be butter trips from Altwarp with passenger ships. From 1998 to 2004, the shipping company operated the Adler Polar, a small icebreaker and tug , which was also stationed in Altwarp. Another car ferry, the much larger Adler Germania, was added in 1999 , with which a connection was established from Altwarp to the port of Swinoujscie on Usedom . The Adler Polonia car ferry was sold in 2002. When Poland joined the EU on May 1, 2004 and the associated discontinuation of duty-free sales, passenger numbers plummeted. At the same time the Adler Princess and the two car ferries were launched and ferry operations were discontinued. Only the smaller Adler X was still used on excursions from Altwarp. In 2010, the trips were finally stopped due to insufficient utilization and the Adler X was transferred to Hamburg. Adler Germania , launched in Altwarp, was towed to Esbjerg for scrapping at the beginning of September 2011 .

Since the shipping company was founded in 1950, ships in the fleet have been operating on the North Sea , mainly in the North Frisian Wadden Sea. It all started with a small cutter that offered trips from Nordstrand . With the construction of a small passenger ship , the Adler, in 1961, the fleet grew steadily. The ships Adler III , Adler IV , Adler V , Adler VI and Adler VII were added one after the other . From 1975 trips were made from the holiday island of Sylt . The company still uses the List ports on Sylt and Hörnum to this day . For many tourists, the trips were attractive because of the duty-free business. In the meantime, the ships kept changing. 1987 drove the coat of arms of Norderney under the charter name Adler von Hörnum for one season for Sven Paulsen, then for four years the Palucca . The Adler VIII was used from List in 1990. With the completion of the Adler Express in 1993, a high-speed ferry with a maximum speed of 33 knots, trips from Hörnum (Sylt) to Strucklahnungshörn (north beach) could now be carried out twice a day. In the spring of 2006, the Adler Nordica was added to the fleet again and was deployed to Helgoland from Sylt, Rømø and Amrum until October 2006 .
Adventure trips are offered with the fishing cutters Gret Palucca and Rosa Paluka from List, as are trips with the Adler VI from Hörnum to the seal banks and the connection Föhr , Amrum, Sylt with the Adler IV . The Adler Express has been traveling between Sylt and Nordstrand since 1993 and the Adler V offers excursions from Nordstrand.
The Adler Cat catamaran, which was bought in December 2017 through the subsidiary German Fast Ferry GmbH & Co. KG , has been used mainly for excursions to Heligoland since 2018 . The Adler Rüm Hart catamaran, built in 2019 , uses Adler ships between Föhr, Amrum, Hooge, Langeneß and Dagebüll.
On the Baltic Sea
Adler ships from Usedom
In 1992, the Adler III was used as the first ship in the fleet from the Imperial Baths on Usedom to Swinoujscie ( Poland ), later the Adler VIII . From the early 1990s, the Baltic Sea fleet grew rapidly. The main reason was the duty-free business , which made “ butter trips ” to Poland attractive. Over the years the new, comparatively large ships Adler Clipper , Adler Dania , Adler Nordica , Adler Baltica , Adler Vineta and Adler XI were added. There were trips from Swinoujscie to Zinnowitz and so-called pier hopping between Ahlbeck , Heringsdorf , Bansin , Koserow and Zinnowitz. The EU -membership Poland on 1 May 2004 and the associated end of the profitable duty free business was a serious blow to the company. For many holidaymakers, the shopping trips became unattractive, and therefore the number of passengers and thus the size of the fleet from Usedom was halved.
Furthermore, trips from the three imperial baths to Misdroy (on Wolin ) and Swinoujscie as well as harbor tours in Swinoujscie are offered today . These lines are served by the two passenger ships Adler Vineta and Adler XI . From Peenemünde , the Adler-Mönchgut runs daily to Rügen in the summer season .
"Baltic Sea Incident"
On the afternoon of October 17, 2006, an incident occurred on the Adler Dania off Usedom on the Polish border. Three passengers stated that they were Polish customs officers in civilian clothes and asked the staff to access the on-board shops in order to confiscate spirits that were not taxed in Poland. Since there had already been several such cases in which the goods were then transported away in private cars without receipts, the captain asked for the ID. Since the three people were unable to produce clear identification, the master agreed with his shipping company on how to proceed. In addition, shortly before berthing in Świnoujście, he asked for an exit permit with special urgency because of an injured person on board. This was done with the intention of entering German territorial waters and clarifying everything before the German authorities. The Adler Dania then turned shortly before the edge of the quay and set course for Heringsdorf in Germany. Suddenly a Polish border patrol boat appeared and Polish border patrol officers fired three or four shots from there; allegedly it was warning shots from a signal pistol. The Adler Dania drove towards the border patrol boat and then ran to Heringsdorf, where the three alleged and, as it turned out, real customs officers were handed over to the German Federal Police . In court the captain was accused of coercing the border guards on their boat and depriving the three customs officers of their liberty on his ship. He was fined 4050 euros for coercion, but acquitted of the charge of deprivation of liberty. Since then, the Adler Dania has been “undesirable” in Poland.
Ruegen island
In 2003 the shipowner Paulsen took over what was then Friedrichsort and renamed it Mönchgut again . Since 2003 the Mönchgut has been operating from Peenemünde via Göhren , Sellin and Binz to the chalk cliffs on Rügen. In March 2013 the Sassnitz shipowner Carsten Nöhren-Petan sold his two ships Binz and Cap Arkona - the entire fleet of the Ostsee-Tour shipping company - to the Adler-Schiff shipping company . The company was initially continued as a subsidiary. About a year later the name Ostsee-Tour disappeared from the brochures, the ships and the Sassnitz shipping office, which is now a branch of the shipping company Adler-Schiff. Furthermore, the Mönchgut and the Binz no longer operate in winter , but only one of the two ships, during which time Göhren is no longer approached, but the city port of Sassnitz. During the season, the previous timetable for all three ships remained.
From Wismar
In January 2010 Sven Paulsen took over the fleet of the shipowner Wolfgang Clermont, and with it the ships Mecklenburg , Insel Poel , Hanseatic City of Wismar and Hanseat . As before, these ships are used for harbor tours in Wismar and for excursions to the island of Poel . "The fleet of the shipping company Clermont will continue to operate to the same extent and under the same name, the headquarters will remain as a branch of Adler-Schiff GmbH & Co. KG at Alter Holzhafen 7," said Adler spokeswoman Juliane Peter in the Lübecker Nachrichten . However, at the end of 2011 MS Insel Poel was transferred to Husum and renamed Lütte Adler . At the beginning of June 2016, Lütte Adler returned to Wismar and, after a renovation, strengthened the fleet there.
From Warnemünde
The Merkur II motor yacht has been used for burials at sea and charter trips from Warnemünde since summer 2016 .
On inland waters and the Kiel Canal
On the Kiel Canal
In 1982 the shipping company was given responsibility for the passenger ferry connection over the Kiel Canal between Kiel-Holtenau and Kiel-Wik. Initially, the existing Wik ferry with Adler staff continued to operate until April 1983. From May 1983 the Adler III was used as a passenger ferry on this line until it was replaced by the newly built Adler I in June 1984 . With the Adler III , the shipping company then carried out day trips on the Kiel Canal, among other things. In 2000 the paddle steamer Freya was added, which is also used for excursions and replaced the Adler III in the canal. She was then u. a. used starting from the island of Hiddensee . In addition to the Freya , the Princess , which was previously in Altwarp, has been making day trips on the Kiel Canal since 2006 .
In 2007, the water and shipping authorities in Brunsbüttel and Kiel gradually began to outsource the operation of the car ferries on the Kiel Canal to private companies. The ferries used remain the property of the federal government, but are operated by external staff to reduce costs. As part of a tender, Adler-Schiff took over responsibility for ferry operations at Landwehr in December 2008 , which has been carried out with Adler staff ever since. In May and June 2010, the ferry stations in Burg and Brunsbüttel and on June 1, 2013 the ferry stations in Kudensee and Sehestedt followed through further tenders, each with a three-year time limit . On February 1, 2017, the shipping company also took over the ferry stations in Hochdonn , Fischerhütte and Oldenbüttel , while the ferry operations in Brunsbüttel and Kudensee fell back to the Brunsbüttel Waterways and Shipping Authority.
Hamburg
In 2004/2005, the two sister ships Adler River and Adler Queen were still making harbor tours in Hamburg . They were sold in 2005 and renamed Classic River and Classic Queen . From 2010 the Adler X operated in Hamburg . It was chartered in 2011 by Party- und Hafenrundfahrten Wiese GmbH and renamed Störtebeker . Occasionally the Princess , the Koi and the paddle steamer Freya make trips to / from Hamburg.
Eider and Tönning
The Adler II has been operating from Tönning and the Eider Barrage since March 2004 . Occasionally the Princess also takes trips on the Eider .
Special units
Princess
The Adler Princess has been operating for the Adler-Schiff shipping company since 1995. The ship is mostly from Kiel and Hamburg on the Kiel Canal , the Eider and Elbe . Occasionally, trips to Bremen or Rostock are made, but mostly to certain events. The ship's home port is Rendsburg . The Adler Princess , then Stad Zierikzee , used to be used from Zierikzee , the Netherlands, and later by the Adler shipping company from Altwarp. In spring 2017, the restaurant and event ship received a complete modernization and a new design, as well as a shortening of the name to Princess .
Paddle steamer Freya
In 1999, the shipping company acquired the paddle steamer Freya from the Netherlands, a largely original side paddle steamer from 1905 with a functioning steam engine . In memory of the line connection for island supply between Højer and Munkmarsch / Sylt, which existed until the construction of the Hindenburg dam in 1927 , the ship was first used from List / Sylt and the following year from Kiel , where it has developed into one of the state capital's maritime attractions . The Freya is one of the shipping company's jewels, the ship makes trips on the Kiel Canal, the Kiel Fjord , the Eider , the Trave and the Elbe .
Mercury II
The Merkur II is a motor yacht from 1966. Since June 2011 it has been operated by the Adler Reederei. Initially, charter trips from Hamburg , Kiel and Sylt were offered with her . The ship has been used for burials at sea and charter trips from Warnemünde since summer 2016 . The ship was previously owned by HSH Nordbank .
Koi
In the summer of 2014 , the Adler Dania passenger ship became the Koi event ship due to an extensive renovation and has since been used as an event ship for parties and events on the North and Baltic Seas.
Eagle cat
At the end of 2017, the Adler Cat joined the fleet of the Adler-Ships shipping company. The catamaran has been on various routes within Germany on the North Sea since April 2018, including Helgoland traffic and between Sylt and Cuxhaven .
Adler Rüm Hart
The shipping company has been operating the Adler Rüm Hart catamaran in the North Frisian Wadden Sea between Föhr, Amrum, Hooge, Langeneß and Dagebüll since May 2019 . The ship is chartered by the Wyker steamship shipping company Föhr-Amrum .
