The Spiekeroog IV is a ferry and cargo ship that is used to transport people and cargo between the North Sea island of Spiekeroog and Neuharlingersiel . The ship, built in 1979 and owned by Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH , entered service in April 2010 as the Spiekeroog IV . It took over the tasks of the old cargo ship Tilde , which was decommissioned in December 2009 .

history

The Spiekeroog IV was built under the hull number 1452 as Pellworm I by the Husum shipyard in Husum and laid down on February 20, 1979 . The launch took place in April 1979, at the beginning of May the ship was delivered to the Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft . Until 1996 it drove on the route between Pellworm and Strucklahnungshörn / Nordstrand . It was then sold to Sven Paulsen, Altwarp, and operated under the name Adler Pomerania on the route between Altwarp (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and Nowe Warpno (Poland) until 2004 .

On August 18, 2009, the ship was sold to Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH and then rebuilt at the HDR shipyard in Husum. On January 1, 2010, it was renamed to its current name and entered into the shipping register with this name on March 9. After the transfer voyage, the ship arrived in Neuharlingersiel on March 12th. On March 31, 2010, the ship was christened on Spiekeroog during a small celebration. It has been in use between Neuharlingersiel and Spiekeroog since April 1, 2010 and complements the fleet of Spiekeroog I and Spiekeroog II .

Freight transport capacity

Nine truck trailers with a load of 13.7 tons each.

advantages

The commissioning of the Spiekeroog IV has resulted in the following advantages for the island:

  • In addition to the passenger ferries, passengers have the advantage of being able to get to or from Spiekeroog once or twice a day.
  • Goods from truck trailers for the retail trade no longer have to be reloaded twice (once in Neuharlingersiel and once in Spiekeroog), but can be brought by ferry directly to the port of Spiekeroog for reloading onto electric carts.
  • It is no longer necessary to request landing ships from other shipping companies for all large-scale transports (e.g. construction machinery).
  • Due to the RoRo traffic in mostly closed trailers, there is significantly less cargo damage than in the times of the Tilde with open crane loading.
  • A barrier-free passage is provided via the ship's ramp and a passenger area at the height of the working deck with an adjacent toilet for the disabled.

disadvantage

However, the Spiekeroog IV also has a disadvantage:

  • The Spiekeroog IV has a relatively high draft of 1.60 meters . For comparison: Dropships normally have a draft of around one meter. Therefore, she cannot get very close to the ramps. This results in a comparatively obtuse angle between the hinged ramp attached to the Spiekeroog IV and the ramp at the port. Long, low-lying vehicles (trucks, cars with trailers e.g. for horse transport) do not manage to drive over the ramps without touching down. For low loaders and special vehicles, landing ships (e.g. Harle Gatt ) from other shipping companies still have to be ordered. Since March 2011, specially designed trailers have been in use for handling the garbage containers.

Predecessor ship

  • Spiekeroog IV : built in 1927 as Langeoog IV . It operated from 1971 to 1980 as Spiekeroog IV . Since 2007 she has been operating as a discotheque ship in the port of Rotterdam under the name Wilsun .
  • Freight ship Tilde , converted barge with crane loading and unloading.
