Munkmarsch
Munkmarsch ( Danish : Munkmarsk , North Frisian : Munkmērsk ) is a district of the municipality of Sylt on the island of Sylt . The place is on the Wadden Sea east of the grounds of Sylt Airport , south of Braderup and north of Keitum . The number of second home owners are not included in the population of 87 in 2002 .
history
Munkmarsch was first mentioned in 1422 as a field name for Mönchsmarsch . The name Mönchsmarsch referred to the properties of the Ribe monastery on the island of Sylt. There was probably no settlement, just a homestead north of the Keitum church . In 1744 one of the Sylt grain mills was built above today's harbor, which was in use until the beginning of the 20th century. After the old Keitum harbor was silted up more and more, a new harbor was built at this point in the 1850s. From then on, it served as the most important ferry port on the island, where the ferries, post and supply ships from the mainland port of Hoyer lock moored.
From 1888, the first trains of the Sylt island railway brought arriving guests to the newly created seaside resort of Westerland from here . Previously, the travelers had to be driven to Westerland by horse-drawn carriage over unpaved sand paths. The Tønder – Højer Sluse railway and the ferry connection became insignificant in 1927 with the opening of the Hindenburg dam. Today the port is owned as a marina by a private yacht club. The port and the clubhouse with small restaurants are open to the public. The old ferry house, located directly at the harbor, which was built in 1869 by the captain and postman Thomas Selmer as a post office, quarters and lounge for the arriving and departing passengers, was used as an excursion restaurant until the 1980s. After many years of vacancy, it was converted into a luxury hotel with a restaurant in 2002/2003.
Munkmarsch was part of the municipality of Keitum, which was incorporated into Sylt-Ost in 1970 .
Geology and nature
The so-called White Cliff runs along the coast from Munkmarsch to Braderup , an up to eight meter high edge to the Wadden Sea made of light kaolin sand . An extensive heathland stretched west of the village until the air base was built in the 1930s ; Remnants of this can still be found on the edge of this area.
