Tinnum is a part of the municipality of Sylt . The district has an area of 9.11 km².

Tinnum was first mentioned in 1440. From 1547 to 1868 the seat of the Sylt bailiffs was here, and the island prison and the district court were also located there. The Alte Landvogtei, built in 1649, is one of the oldest houses on Sylt .

In 1970, the community merged with the neighboring communities of Archsum , Keitum and Morsum to form the community of Sylt-Ost . Tinnum was the largest settlement within the new municipality. On the cut-off date of the last census on May 25, 1987, Tinnum had a population of 2228. On January 1, 2009, Sylt-Ost was part of the new municipality of Sylt.

The place forms a structural connection with Westerland to the west . Here are - also due to the central location on Sylt - several industrial areas, which are of essential importance for the entire island for economic sectors that are subordinate to tourism . There are also several large discount stores here, so that Tinnum - in addition to Westerland - takes on central supply functions for the island and its guests.

Belonging to the place is the so-called Tinnumburg , an eight meter high circular rampart with a diameter of 120 m, which was built around the birth of Christ.

Tinnum is on the march from Hamburg to Westerland .
