The boehmspint ( Merops boehmi ) is a bird from the bee-eater family , also called the spinach. The species, which is native from central and eastern Africa to southern Africa, is named after the German zoologist and explorer Richard Böhm (1854–1884).
features
The Böhmspint reaches a body length of 17 centimeters, its weight is about 20 grams. The wings as well as the back and belly are greenish. The tail, like the beak and the eye stripe, is black, the throat and forehead are brown-reddish. The iris and legs are brown. Males and females look alike.
food
The boehmspint's diet consists of insects such as butterflies, bees and wasps, grasshoppers and ants. They are caught in flight and eaten or taken to a sheltered place to be chopped up.
Habitat and Distribution
The habitat of the Böhmspint are light and dense forests in southern and equatorial Africa, especially with mopane trees. It occurs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Malawi , Mozambique , Tanzania and Zambia .
