About this picture

Sylt is a municipality on the North Sea island of the same name in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein . It was created on January 1, 2009 from the merger of the city of Westerland with the communities of Sylt-Ost and Rantum . The municipality is located in the center of the island. It covers almost 60 percent of the island's area and 70 percent of its inhabitants.

history

Town hall of the municipality of Sylt

The merger of the three municipalities was preceded by a multi-year discussion on the unification of the city of Westerland with the six municipalities of the Sylt Landscape Office . The aim was to create a common local government for the entire island. However, the project failed due to resistance from individual communities. A merger bill drawn up in summer 2007 was not passed.

In December 2007, a local citizens' initiative launched a referendum to merge the two municipalities of Westerland and Sylt-Ost. On May 25, 2008, the merger of the two municipalities on January 1, 2009 was decided by referendum. In July 2008, the residents of Rantum also declared their willingness to merge during a residents' meeting. Finally, on September 30, 2008, the mayors of the three municipalities signed the territorial unification agreements. In contrast to the former city of Westerland, the municipality of Sylt initially did not apply for city rights .

The municipality of Sylt also carries out the administrative business for the Sylt landscape office to which it does not belong. According to a unanimous decision, the administrative seat is the previous town hall of Westerland, plus branch offices and citizens' offices. The political bodies of Wenningstedt-Braderup , Hörnum and List on Sylt are currently discussing specific accession scenarios. Only the municipality of Kampen has not yet participated in the merger efforts.

Districts

With the exception of Westerland, the districts are called "Seebad". The district of Westerland is called "North Sea Spa". Each district forms a local council, with Keitum and Munkmarsch forming a joint local council.
